Roulette
Roulette-esque fashion is the new Yin-Yang. This includes the hairstyle that’s been trending for almost a decade. Another name for it could be Rouge Noir. In the phoho that I have used as the cover, Sarah Paulson protectively towers over Holland Taylor as they attended the 2019 Vanity Fair Oscar Party. They began dating in 2015, and are still together today. Your guess is as good as mine as to how they will celebrate their tenth anniversary.
In the above collage, I admire Rihanna’s consistency in red while Cara Delevingne always chooses to bet on black. While Rihanna is bisexual, Cara is a lesbian. The film that they were in was called Valerian and The City of a Thousand Planets (2017). Cara is primarily a model, so the next phase in roulette duo photography would be having two women wear Brazilian bikini bottoms which are so literally threadbare that they redefine the definition of briefs. In other words, thongs. Such lingerie is pointless when the derriere is on full display. It’s like when Summer Walker decided to forego wearing a bra or another kind of cleavage clothing just so that she could wear golden nipple covers as she attended the 2022 BET Awards at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, although she borrowed liberally from Cara when she attended the 2022 Met Gala at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
Despite the title and age gap, Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman do not play a couple in May December (2023). Ironically, they have played characters who have kissed other women. Even more iconic is that director Todd Haynes had directed a lesbian drama called Carol (2015). Despite May December being filmed in 2022, Julianne and Natalie had known each other for a long time. They were photographed together at the following events: a 2003 AIDS benefit for kids in New York, the 2011 Critics Choice Movie Awards at the Hollywood Palladium, the 2015 Vanity Fair Oscar Party in Beverly Hills and the 2016 Hyde Park music festival.
Less epic in terms of time span but still worthy of being called a saga is the friendship between the below actresses: Lily James and Laura Carmichael. Their bond has been photographed for over a decade with the above photo being taken at the BFI London Film Festival’s Luminous Gala at a hotel called “The Londoner” in September 2022. That year was the tenth anniversary of when they began working with each other on season 3 of Downton Abbey, albeit Laura had been working on the series since the beginning. As for lesbianism, Lily played Alicia Vikander’s bride in a 2019 short film called One Red Nose Day and a Wedding.
Laura is a cloudier disposition to decipher but she has given enough clues over the years to be at least described as bisexual-adjacent. I will focus on two clues because they pertain to Downton Abbey. In March 2016, Miss Carmichael participated in an interview for the PBS site where she was asked to explain what she hoped for her character - Edith: “I guess I sort of dreamt about alternatives. Would she give up men entirely and just focus on work, become a radical lesbian? We all loved that. Yeah, we would think about and talk about it on the set amongst the cast.”
In an interview that was conducted for a December 2015 article for The Telegraph, journalist Judith Woods must have picked up on something either in terms of what she personally perceived or what she heard through the grapevine because she went out of her way to report Laura’s facial demeanour as Judith tried to guess what the Christmas special was going to show for the romantic fate of Edith. When Judith suggested a lesbian relationship, Laura could barely contain herself as she said: “Who is to say that a husband constitutes a happy ending?”
In the left photo of the above collage, Lyndon Smith is being spooned by “creative director” Rachel Braband. In the main photo on the right, Lyndon was at the gym with Katrina Bowden (who played a lady lover in Nurse 3D). As for the remaining photo, she was with actress/singer Skyler Day at the TV Land Awards in April 2015. They acted in the same TV series - Parenthood. They bonded enough that, in May, Lyndon attended an acoustic gig at a café called Republic of Pie.
In the left photo of the below collage, Haley Bennett is swooning over Juno Temple at the Lady Dior party in London circa May 2016. Haley played a lesbian in a film that Juno had co-starred in: Kaboom (2010). Juno then played a lesbian in Jack & Diane (2012). In the photo on the right, Sarah Jones kissed Krys Marshall during their attendance the Los Angeles premiere of For All Mankind (an Apple TV+ series) in October 2019. Sarah played a bisexual nurse in Kendra - an online 2012 series. In 2021, Krys came out as pansexual.
Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda have been best friends for so many years. Lily is a lesbian who is married to another Jane, née Wagner, whereas Fonda has only married men despite having many sexual encounters with women during her prime years. The context of these encounters were usually threesomes or foursomes with her first husband: Roger Vadim.
As for the black women in the below collage, actress Paula Patton and producer Queen Latifah attended the Hollywood premiere of The Perfect Match in early March 2016. Paula played a lesbian teacher in Precious (2009) whereas the artist formerly known as Dane Elaine Owens is a real-life lesbian.
Donna D'Errico and Sharise Ruddell were seen together in April 2018 despite having long divorced the two main members of Motley Crue. Donna divorced Frank Ferrara (i.e. Nikki Sixx) in 2007 after marrying him in 1996 whereas Sharise divorced Vince O’Neil in 1993 after marrying him in 1987. Donna is the one holding the gold purse.
The star of Vampire Academy (2014), Zoey Deutch, has been alleged to be bisexual due to the women in her social circle who are either gay and bisexual (including those who have played such characters on camera). There are photos of her getting kissy and licky with other women. Vampire Academy has lesbian subtext, as Zoey said: “It’s about friendship between two girls, prioritizing of each other over a relationship with a guy.”
Sarah Hyland, on the other hand, is definitely into women. Some of her private sapphic photos were leaked in the infamous iClouds hacking scandal. As an actress, she kissed another woman in Date and Switch (2014). Kylie Jenner and Anastasia “Stassie” Karanikolaou are too close to be best friends forever. Kylie said: “The whole internet thinks Stass and I are dating now. I always make out with Stass, I don't know why this is like a new thing.”
I have already written two articles about Taylor Swift being in the closet (on here and on WordPress), so enough said. As for Jamie King, she is bisexual. She even played a bi character in a TV series called The Class. As for how Taylor Swift can have so many girlfriends, Will Smith was known in recent years for having a harem.
On the gay-themed sites PinkNews and Autostraddle, Gina Rodriguez was quoted as saying that she is more bisexual than the character that she played in Jane the Virgin. Gina was kissed by Lilly Singh, a self-outed bisexual, as they arrived at the Annual Bill of Rights Dinner at the Beverly Wilshire Four Seasons Hotel in early December 2017.
Jennifer Lawrence’s “best friend” Laura Simpson was referred to as her “Oscar date” as they attended the 86th Academy Awards in March 2014. When Jennifer (among other celebrities) had her naked photos leaked from her iCloud account, some of the photos were of a naked Laura.
In the long run, Jennifer and Laura married men but that doesn’t change the fact that Jodie Foster celebrated her tenth anniversary of tying the knot with Alexandra Hedison. Anne Heche didn’t marry Ellen DeGeneres but they at least weren’t shy about calling themsleves a couple. There are many other examples of women who complemented each other with the red/black dynamic but these were the most salient examples.
