Laugh Riot Act
Lucy Hale’s beauty is augmented by her humour. In her younger years, she looked like a mixture of two actresses from the comedy series Modern Family - Ariel Winter and Sarah Hyland. Lucy Hale picked up on this when she posted a photo of herself with Sarah. Since Lucy lost the buccal fat, she resembles Phoebe Tonkin more. They’ve even taken photos together. Ironically, Lucy’s mother looked like Helen Hunt when they were younger. Even more of an irony is that Lucy used to look like she could be the daughter of Claudia Christian. In the January 2013 issue of Nylon, Mickey Rapkin described Lucy as a portable Rachel Weisz.
In the June/July 2011 issue of Seventeen, Lucy Hale made a confession about her glasses: “They’re not real. I just like the way they look and they are great when I don’t want to wear eye makeup!”
She would be a shoo-in for horror movies: “I’ve learned to live by the motto ‘Do something that scares you often’ because you can always learn something about yourself.”
When asked if she was scared to be a part of Hollywood at such a young age, Lucy said: “I am more scared now about seeing what goes on here. I see so many actresses my age get in trouble and lose their way, and it’s sad to see all that great talent and potential just go away.”
By the time that we get to the June/July issue in 2013, Lucy said something that reminded me of the fact that she played the titular character of a film called The Unicorn (2018). In 2013, Hale was talking about Pretty Little Liars when she said: “I still have bad skin or hair days. I know we always look so glamorous on the show, but we are human. I never want to be that girl who seems high and mighty on this pedestal. I’m not all unicorns and glitter.”
Since 2012, Lucy had been recording a country album. In 2013, she told Amy Spencer for Seventeen: “I know there’s a lot of ‘Oh God, here comes another one.’ But this is something I wanted to do way before I dreamed of acting. People always laughed at me because I say y’all.”
In the March 2012 issue of a Brazilian magazine called Capricho, Hale talked about the PLL TV series: “We have a lot of fun, more than we should. The four of us have fits of laughter all the time and always have to stop filming. Ashley is the funniest. We’re always falling and tripping in front of the cameras. There was one time Troian fell out of bed and hurt herself badly. She fell face-first. And she had to go to the doctor.”
In the June 2018 issue of Modeliste, Lucy said: “My first job out in L.A. was a Bratz doll commercial. Super exciting stuff, I know. I was like a 15 year old playing with dolls hair, but that was my first paycheck so I was super excited.”
Going back to what I said about horror movies, Truth or Dare was pitched by her as: “The whole concept of the movie is super outrageous but was so much fun to film. I’m a huge horror/thriller fan to begin with and to get to be a part of a film where we’re doing things that would never happen in a million years was just a blast.”
In the June 2018 issue of an Australian teen magazine called Girlfriend, Hale talked about this horror movie which inspired Smile (2022): “It was actually hysterical to shoot because when the demon possesses the characters, they get these big smiles on their faces. So we had to film those parts with our chins pushed down to our chests and smile as wide as we could. It was so unnatural and ridiculous. It’s quite frightening. I already look like a cartoon character anyway, but it was just so creepy!”
In the Winter 2021 issue of a German magazine called Bloggingtales, Lucy said: “It's easy to love yourself on our "good" days, but the real work is loving yourself on your "bad" days. Show yourself compassion and grace, no matter what situation you're in. When my inner critic goes berserk, I always have to remind myself to talk to myself the way I would talk to a child. Show yourself love the way you would show your younger self.”
In the September 2014 issue of Cosmopolitan, Hale talked about auditioning for Fifty Shades of Grey (2015): “That audition was so uncomfortable! It’s exactly what you thought it would be: a big monologue but very, very sexual. My mom and my grandma would be horrified! There were some things that I was so embarrassed to be reading out loud, but it’s one of those things where you have to commit wholeheartedly or you’re going to make a fool of yourself.”
Lucy was asked if she felt more vulnerable singing than acting. She replied: “It’s as vulnerable as you can get besides being naked running down a hallway!”
In the September 2022 issue of Modeliste, Hale said: “All my friends, or even people I don’t know, call me Luce. I have a handful of people who call me Goose, which came from loosey goose. Some call me Lulu. I have two friends who call me Boots which came from Puss in Boots, then Luce in Boots, then just Boots.”
While not being a kleptomaniac like Winona Ryder, Luce said the following when asked what was her favourite project to date: “Sometimes it’s friendships or some truly killer shoes from the wardrobe. I’ve literally stolen props before.”
This doesn’t include Pretty Little Liars because November 2016 was when Teen Vogue found out from Lu: “People just assume we can take souvenirs, but no one lets us take anything. It goes into Warner Brothers stock. I didn’t get to take anything. That’s okay. Aria’s style is different from mine in real life, anyway, but she was really fun to dress up as.”
In the October 2021 issue of Shape, Lucy said: “You start getting your power back by breaking up with someone who treats you poorly or telling a friend - ‘Hey, you owe me money.’ It’s not one big moment.”
In the October 2013 issue of Self, she said: “I was on the beach in Hawaii and there were paparazzi in the bushes. I don’t think anybody wants to be photograped in their bikini unless you’re like a Victoria’s Secret model.”
In the December 2021 issue of Interview, Hale said: “I would always laugh when people found out I booked a show called Ragdoll. They’d be like, “Oh my god so cute, can’t wait to see it!” The ragdoll is six body parts sewn together into the shape of one. Yeah, it’s super cute.”
In the June 2018 issue of Haute Living, Lulu summarized social media: “It’s a highlight reel. It’s everyone on their best days, posting a picture they’ve probably taken a hundred times and put a million filters on.”
In the July 2014 issue of Flare, record producer and friend Mike Daly joked: “To the chagrin of struggling actors serving lattes all over Los Angeles, she came here as a singer and people were like ‘Wow, you are fantastically good-looking, you should take some acting lessons.’ The stars aligned for her.”
Her album was released on June 3 in 2014. A dozen years later, Lucy turned 37 on the 14th.
